Nils Oberschelp & Dr Georg Berger (f.l.t.r.)

Dr Berger, Mr Oberschelp, what makes the Clarius Group special?

Dr Georg Berger: We help companies to outsource and optimise their support functions. This includes all areas that a CFO is typically responsible for, from legal and compliance, data protection and technology to finance and accounting. To put it in a nutshell: we take care of the duties so that our customers can concentrate on their core business.

Nils Oberschelp: We are one of the leading Managed Services Providers, or MSPs for short, in Germany. Our speciality is the close combination of technology – our proprietary, AI-driven software solution – and personal consulting. Customers determine the exact scope of services, whether individual tasks or the complete takeover of entire departments, such as finance and accounting.

Dr Georg Berger: Apart from global management consultancies, hardly any other MSP in Germany offers such a comprehensive service.

What exactly is your service?

Dr Georg Berger: In the support departments of companies, a great deal of legal expertise is required to correctly fulfil all regulations, verification and reporting obligations. This is not easy, especially as there are often changes and innovations. Through our consultants, we offer expertise in all relevant areas of law such as commercial, labour, civil and contract law, as well as the knowledge of TÜV-certified data protection officers or compliance experts.

Nils Oberschelp: Examples of our work include the Supply Chain Duty of Care Act, the EU Deforestation Regulation and the General Data Protection Regulation. If you commission us, we make sure that everything runs smoothly. And since we have around 200 customers who rely on our expertise and services, they can all trust that we have a great deal of knowledge and experience.

For which companies does it make sense to work with the Clarius Group?

Dr Georg Berger: There are hardly any limits. We work for major international corporations, some of which entrust us with entire areas of responsibility. One of the more recent examples is the electronics company Samsung, which has entrusted us with its finance operations. We provide this service in our subsidiary Clarius Services. However, we also have many medium-sized clients who are pleased that we do not incur high costs for every new legal problem, but instead offer them a fair and reliable price model.

Nils Oberschelp: Our subsidiary janolaw offers software-based, fully automated solutions that are trusted by thousands of small businesses in Germany.

The Clarius Group relies heavily on software and AI. What are the advantages of this for customers?

Dr Georg Berger: The biggest advantage is the connection between man and machine. Our software, the ‘Solutions Suite’, bundles the tasks that we take on for a customer in one interface, thus ensuring clarity and control. We automate standard tasks as far as possible, but leave no one alone with the technology: our colleagues provide support and advice wherever customised solutions, complicated cases and complex special tasks are involved. In this combination of high-tech and high-brain, we see the future not only of legal advice, but basically of all tasks in legal and financial operations. It is our ambition to be one of the technology pioneers in the German market in this area.

Does that mean you will work fully automatically at some point?

Nils Oberschelp: Legal advice will change dramatically as a result of digitalisation and AI. Standard cases will be processed automatically and only monitored by humans. All providers who have integrated technology comprehensively and at an early stage will have an advantage here. The Clarius Group has already laid the foundations for automated legal advice. And we will continue to have our experts for all individual cases in the future.

Dr Georg Berger: That is crucial: we will continue to offer both – high-tech and high-level expertise. And therefore good service at fair prices. In the foreseeable future, no customer will accept pure AI solutions when it comes to legal requirements, data protection or compliance. People with all their experience are also needed here.

If someone reads this interview and calls you: Do you still have any free capacity?

Dr Georg Berger: Yes, we are consistently pursuing our growth strategy because we are convinced that our service quality will continue to benefit from this. We have shown that an independent managed services provider can not only survive on the market, but also grow strongly. We are ready for further steps.

Nils Oberschelp: We look forward to every contact. We are convinced that we can help many more companies – flexibly, reliably and efficiently.
